Cannabis Misconceptions and Myths: Debunked

Cannabis has been around for thousands of years - some evidence actually suggests it’s 28 million years old - and while our early ancestors were probably toking long before we could even imagine, there’s a ton of information out there on cannabis. The issue? Being able to separate fact, from fiction. This article breaks down the 5 biggest cannabis myths.

1. You Can't Overdose on Cannabis

The age old question: Can you overdose on weed? Yes (to an extent). While you can overdose on weed, it’s not fatal and likely won’t require you to take a trip to the hospital unlike other substances. Ever heard of the term ‘greening out’? It’s not just for teenagers who try to show off how high (pun intended) their tolerance is. It happens whenever you smoke too much in one sesh. The effects? You’ll typically feel nauseous, get the spins, experience dizziness and mild hallucinations. While it might feel super scary, the feelings usually don’t last more than several hours, and no one has ever died from consuming or smoking too much weed. To avoid greening out, start slow and go slow - everyone has different tolerance levels!

2. There's No Difference Between Sativa and Indica Strains Anymore

You’ve probably heard your friends (who claim to be cannabis connoisseurs) talk about how they ‘heard there’s no real difference between Sativa and Indica strains anymore’. While there’s a ton of breeding these days, this statement is wholly untrue. This misconception completely ignores the craftsmanship of master growers and the quality of new products coming to the market.

Although, over the years there’s been a huge shift in focussing more on the terpene content vs. whether or not a strain is considered an Indica, Sativa, or a Hybrid! To put it simply, terpenes are aromatic oils produced in plants which create distinctive smells and flavours. In cannabis, terpenes are secreted from the same glands that produce THC, CBD and cannabinoids. Terpenes are essential to the weed experience - some promote relaxed effects, while others promote an elevated sense of focus.Check out our article 7 Cannabis Terpenes Explained to get the full breakdown of why terpenes are so important. While users might experience effects differently, there’s still very much a difference between strains!

3. All Weed in Canada is Legal

Since legalization in 2017, there’s been a massive influx of licensed producers and private retailers coming to the fore, including Burb. But does mean that all weed and cannabis products in the market are legal? No! There’s still a ton of grey and black market product available for purchase. While this may seem like a positive thing for some, a huge difference between products coming from the unregulated market vs. the legal market is quality control.

As an example, there’s a massive difference in quality between grey market and legal market shatter - products from the grey market don’t go through the same strenuous process to remove impurities. This results in products that contain traces of propane, hexane, and other dangerous variations which are extremely harmful to the human body. In a recent study conducted by the University of British Columbia, researchers found that gas and heavy metals found in grey market shatter had a similar damaging effect on the brain similar to those who consumed narcotics such as heroin.

Another danger in grey market shatter is the level of pesticides in the starting material (flower) used by grey market producers. If the flower contains banned pesticides, the shatter concentration process will inevitably concentrate the pesticides as well. This could result in consumers inhaling high doses of pesticides alongside THC in their shatter.

4. Potency is the Biggest Factor When it Comes to Quality (and Safety)

Potency does NOT determine a strains quality. In fact, this is probably the biggest misconception when it comes to the actual quality of weed. Factors that ARE determinants in weed quality is how the plants are grown, under what conditions, the cleanliness of the grow space, knowledge of the growers, light conditions, etc. As we mentioned above, it varies between different cannabis products. Concentrates require a much more strenous process than edibles, or pre-rolls, or even beverages and bath bombs. To make sure you are getting the highest quality possible, make sure you shop at reputable stores that are licensed!

5. You Can't Get Addicted to Cannabis

This is true - sort of. While the compounds found in cannibinoids
do not hold the same addictive properties as illicit drugs, you can still become dependant on flower. As a serious word of caution, use responsibly!
